Samuel Taylor Coleridge by Peter Vandyke, oil on canvas, 1795. National Portrait Gallery, London.

The Coleridge Memorial Trust are launching a Crowdfunding campaign to raise the final money required to have a memorial statue of Samuel Taylor Coleridge placed at the parish church in Ottery St Mary, the home of his birth.

No such life-sized statue exists anywhere in the world to honour one of the finest poets and thinkers. Fundraising began in 2017 and to this date the Trust have raised £30,000 of a required £90,000. They have a sculptor, Nicholas Dimbleby, ready to begin work, and have all the permissions necessary for placing the statue at Ottery St Mary church.

They have to date received the prominent support of Hilary Mantel, Andrew Motion and Richard Holmes.

The Crowdfunding campaign will be launched on the 21st March.

The K-SAA is keen to share news of how the authors of the Romantic period are to be celebrated and remembered in public spaces. In 2018 we reported on the proposed memorial plaque to Percy Bysshe Shelley in Oxford – read more here.

Do you know where there might be further proposals for monuments related to the Romantic poets or other literary figures from the period? Let us know.
