In an event coming this September, composer Gregg Kallor shares his thoughts about the enduring resonance of Mary Shelley’s heartbreaking novel, Frankenstein, and the process of adapting it into an opera, commissioned by Arizona Opera and premiering in October, 2023. In a multimedia presentation that weaves together music and literature, Kallor explores how the plight of a living being that is shunned and vilified for its “otherness” continues to speak to us across generations and borders — and why telling this story about the urgent need for empathy, at this time and in this way, is vital.

Frankenstein is an opera in two acts adapted from the novel by Mary Shelley. Commissioned by Arizona Opera and funded in part by a gift from Linda and Stuart Nelson, Frankenstein will premiere in October 2023 with performances in Phoenix and Tucson.
