Announcing the John Galt Society Research Grant for 2025

Are you exploring the works, life, or influence of John Galt? The John Galt Society is excited to share its annual Research Grant for 2025, offering up to £500 to support innovative research projects related to this influential Scottish writer and pioneer of Canadian development (1779-1839).

Grant Overview

The John Galt Society Research Grant aims to facilitate groundbreaking research that sheds new light on Galt's significance in literature, history, socio-political thought or economics. The John Galt Society also welcomes projects that situate Galt in other fields, encouraging interdisciplinary approaches.

Key Details:

  • Award Amount: Up to £500

  • Application Deadline: January 31, 2025

  • Eligibility: Open to advanced graduate students, early career scholars, contingent faculty, and independent scholars

Types of Research Projects

This grant supports two types of research projects:

Archival Research Projects:

  • Traditional approach involving travel to archives, libraries, museums, or other relevant locations

  • Examination of material holdings

  • Outcomes typically anchored in print, but not precluding ebooks

  • For projects closer to completion: permissions fees or fees connected with copyediting, indexing or manuscript preparation

Digital Research Projects:

  • New or experimental approaches to research

  • May involve extensive use of online archives or digital collections

  • Could include creating curated websites, electronic editions, or interactive elements

  • Potential for mapping projects or virtual tours of historically significant locations

There may be some overlap between these two types of projects. Applications may describe both components, and if awarded the grant, researchers may apply the funds to the component of their choice if the grant will not cover both. The grant is not intended to fund all projects fully; it is intended, rather, to add to other funding sources or to make expenses more manageable for researchers without other funding sources.

Eligibility Criteria

The grant is open to:

  • Advanced graduate students (enrolled in PhD programs)

  • Early career scholars (PhD received within the last 3 years, holding a permanent academic position for no more than 3 years)

  • Contingent faculty (PhD holders in part-time or temporary academic positions)

  • Independent scholars (PhD holders not in academic positions)
