2024 Newstead Abbey Byron Conference: “Provocative and Provoking, 50 Shades of Byron”

2024 Newstead Abbey Byron Conference: “Provocative and Provoking, 50 Shades of Byron”

2024 marks the bicentenary of Lord Byron’s death. It is therefore fitting that the 2024 Newstead Abbey Byron Conference not only commemorates his death but also celebrates the life and works of both the multifaceted man and his dazzlingly diverse poetry. The keynote will be delivered by Professor Andrew Stauffer, and the full programme is now available here (https://www.thebyronsociety.com/programme/). Registration is now open for this conference, and we hope many people will join us!

As part of the wider bicentenary celebration, we are adding two special events for conference delegates and Nottingham students and faculty.

Coffee and Poetry and Byron at Bromley House Library

This lovely event will include a tour of the library, and a chance to see some of its eighteenth-century collections (especially Byron-related ones), followed by a selection of poetry readings by noted Byronists.

  • Dr Sam Hirst will do a series of readings from Byron’s poems related to Newstead Abbey

  • Dr Omar Miranda and Dr Madeleine Callaghan will perform a reading from Sardanapalus

Dangerous to Know, a prereview performance of a new play on Byron

We are working with noted playwright Deborah Clair and Obscure Theatre to support the preview performance of a new play about Byron’s life, Dangerous to Know which will take place at Newstead Abbey itself, after the end of the conference.
